Farm Progress Show starts in Regina

The 35th year of Canada's Farm Progress Show kicked off in Regina Tuesday.

It's the first time the show can boast over 800 displays, with the total coming in at 806.  Buyers registered so far represent 55 different countries.

The show was launched Monday afternoon.  At the opening, Agriculture Minister Lyle Stewart announced one million dollars in funding to expand agriculture exports and enhance trade opportunities.  The International Market Development Program aims to increase the number and value of trade missions coming in to Saskatchewan.

"What we do in Saskatchewan is quite outstanding," said Minister Stewart, "we just need to get the word out to the rest of the world."

That's something Show Manager Rob O'Connor agrees with.

"Even for a $1,500 travel investment for those buyers, it's just that little bit that helps them make the decision to come to our show, and then invest, on average, $2.5 million in agriculture equipment and technology," O'Connor said.

The program is open to Saskatchewan businesses, industry, organizations and agriculture shows - like the Farm Progress Show.

Applicants can receive funding for up to 50 per cent of costs, to a maximum of $100,000.

O'Connor feels the progress show will be able to take advantage of the program.

"I think that's just going to help us to attract more international buyers."
