On Nov. 18, 1938, a group of about 150 women including Eleanor Patterson, owner of the Washington Times-Herald, protested the removal of cherry trees from the Tidal Basin in Washington, D.C. Officials removed the trees to make room for the Jefferson Memorial.
Some women chained themselves to trees while other stole shovels and refilled previously dug holes.
The group stopped protesting once they were convinced some trees would be transplanted.
