Legend of the Devil''s Chair

Legend of the Devil''s Chair

The Alma Cemetery in Alma, Kan. is the site of this spooky tale.

In the 1800s, a farmer refused to sell his land to accommodate the growing city.

Legend has it the farmer either fell or was pushed into his well while collecting water. When nothing came from the investigation, the sheriff ordered the well to be sealed.

The term “devil’s chair” came from people daring one another to sit atop the well. It’s believed that whoever sits on top of the farmer’s well will disappear.
