In November, Canada’s dairy industry rejected a Senate committee amendment to Bill C-282.
The amendment would only protect supply management in new trade agreements.
Meaning Canada’s dairy market access could be conceded further in future CUSMA negotiations, for example.
The bill must pass in its original form, organizations say.
“This important legislation is about safeguarding our domestic dairy, poultry and egg sectors in future trade negotiations, all while ensuring a stable and predictable supply of these goods,” Dairy Farmers of Canada told Farms.com in an emailed statement.
As of Dec. 3, the bill remains in the Senate.
