Grant cycle 3 opens for Delaware food system enhancement

By Farms.com

Delaware's Department of Agriculture is once again inviting applications for the First State Food System Program’s third cycle. This initiative aims to bolster the state’s food system by providing financial support to farmers and other food supply chain members to enhance their capacity and resilience.

With more than $1.3 million already awarded to 26 projects, the program’s focus for Cycle 3 includes improving food aggregation, cold storage, and transportation - key components identified as critical needs in Delaware’s food supply chain. Projects that encourage community partnership, enhance local food systems, and include sustainable post-grant plans are particularly encouraged.

To apply, entities must navigate the registration process at SAM.gov to secure a Unique Entity ID (UEI), a crucial step before funding can be secured. The program is open to a diverse range of applicants within the food supply chain, including small to medium-sized farms with an annual sales value minimum of $20,000. The initiative seeks projects that demonstrate collaborative efforts to strengthen the local food economy.

With grant amounts varying from $2,500 to $150,000, the program supports a variety of projects, from capital equipment purchases to broader operational and administrative expenses. Applications must be submitted by May 10, 2024, with project completion slated for no later than October 31, 2026.

The application process is facilitated online through the Delaware Community Foundation’s grant portal, simplifying the submission process and connecting applicants with further funding opportunities. This collaboration aims to streamline the application experience while maintaining the grant's distinct identity within the Delaware agricultural framework.

This grant cycle is made possible through funding from the American Rescue Plan Act, emphasizing the importance of agriculture in Delaware’s economy and community well-being.
