Jeremy Hughes, Product Manager at HORSCH, connect with Farms.com to discuss its innovative air seeder, the Avatar SD40.

The Avatar SD40 is designed to enhance the efficiency and ease of seeding processes with its integral fill single disc air seeding system, which incorporates pneumatic airflow and a dual tank system that eliminates tow-between and tow-behind carts.

The machine's design consolidates all components on a common chassis, providing significant advantages in terms of maneuverability and operation.

The Avatar SD40 features two separate tanks, allowing you to simultaneously plant two different products, such as wheat with fertilizer or dual variety soybeans. This dual system is particularly beneficial for managing cover crop varieties and optimizing planting strategies.

One of the standout features of the Avatar SD40 is its advanced ISOBUS implement control and electric metering, which ensure precise meter rate accuracies. The seeder also includes a unique weight transfer system that utilizes the chassis itself to stabilize the toolbar and opener system.

This system can exert up to 550 lbs of penetrating pressure, making it ideal for tough no-till conditions where robust penetration and stability are required.

Maintenance has been significantly simplified in the Avatar SD40 model. It boasts only ten grease points on the entire machine, which dramatically reduces the time and effort required for regular upkeep.

Additionally, the 10-inch toolbar design with 10-inch row spacing allows easy access to all openers from the rear at waist height, avoiding the discomfort often associated with maintenance.

Further enhancing its user-friendly design, the Avatar SD40 single disc opener features an easy-to-adjust seed depth handle, adjustments for seed boots to compensate for wear, and an adjustable camber closing system that adapts to various soil conditions.

“As your blade wears, you can raise that seed boot up, getting more life out of that the seed embedment wheel,” says Hughes. “As seeds coming down the tube and then coming into the furrow, we actually push that seed into the bottom of the furrow and bedding.”

Pushing that deed into the bottom of the furrow allows for more rapid germination, uniform growth and uniform seed depth.

The blade angle uses a compound angle of six degrees to help close the furrow more efficiently after seeding, which is particularly useful in challenging no-till environments.

This model joins a robust lineup of machinery from HORSCH designed to meet the diverse needs of modern farmers.
