Manitoba Pork has a new specialist on its team to help improve the province’s response to swine disease threats.

Jenelle Hamblin joined the swine health management team as Manager of Swine Health Programs. She has experience in animal production and microbiology. Hamblin has also worked in extension and program development in Manitoba’s agriculture department, according to mySteinbach.

Hamblin’s role will primarily be to work with federal and provincial animal health officials to develop new swine health programs. She will also work with producers and their veterinarians to implement these new programs, said Andrew Dickson, Manitoba Pork’s general manager.

“Somebody has to go to those meetings with federal and provincial officials to look at long term plans to deal with really bad diseases that might happen. The secret to controlling those really bad diseases is to catch them early and to get them under control and to eradicate it as soon as possible,” Dickson said to mySteinbach yesterday.

Working closely with veterinarians, Hamblin will help distribute information to producers quickly in the event a disease emergence.
