USGC bridges US barley growers with Mexican brewers

A vital connection has been established between Mexican brewers and U.S. barley producers, orchestrated by the U.S. Grains Council (USGC) to support sustainable beer production.

As one of the leading beer-producing countries, Mexico is progressively focusing on sustainable production methods, a venture supported by the high standards of U.S. agriculture.

During a series of meetings arranged by the USGC, procurement teams from a major Mexican brewery explored various U.S. barley farms and facilities in Montana. These visits included a significant educational component at Montana State University, where the biological qualities of U.S. barley ideal for brewing were discussed by Hannah Uhlman, Director of the Barley Malt and Brewing Lab.

The event’s agenda extended beyond discussions, incorporating tours of a malt quality lab, a greenhouse, and interactions with local barley growers and maltsters. This comprehensive exposure aimed to provide a holistic view of the U.S. barley industry’s commitment to quality and sustainability.

Javier Chavez, a senior marketing specialist at USGC, noted, "The enthusiasm for establishing new business relationships was evident among the participants, who were keen on sourcing sustainable barley for their brewing needs." These initiatives not only reinforce the U.S.-Mexico trade relations but also promote sustainable practices in the global brewing industry.
