By Andrea Gal

A new case of porcine epidemic diarrhea (PED) virus was reported today by Ontario Pork.

This case, on a farrow-to-wean farm in Elgin Country, is the first PED diagnosis in the province since March 31.

PED was first confirmed in Ontario in January 2014. Since then there have been over 90 cases.

As more hay and pastureland is turned over to crop production, wildlife habitat becomes increasingly fragmented, leaving isolated “islands” of grass that may be too small to sustain functioning grassland ecosystems. We explore research using Alberta as a case study to understand the impact that conversion of hay and pasturelands into cropland could have on ecosystem intactness and biodiversity.
