Ontario farm group says they’re troubled by federal job cuts

By , Farms.com

The Ontario Federation of Agriculture (OFA) provided reaction to the federal government’s recent announcement about job cuts in its weekly commentary, saying that they are troubled by the news.

Last week, approximately 700 Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada employees, received notices that their jobs may be cut, which is part of a greater effort to reduce the public sector – a move that has also occurred across all other federal departments.

The farm organization is worried that agriculture research may be lost - nothing that agri-food research is one of our country’s successes. OFA wonders if this signals a shift away from publically-funded research. The farm lobby group also says that they will continue to advocate for greater investments for research through public sector investments. The group concludes by saying that there is a lot of uncertainty surrounding how the cuts may impact services to farmers.

The full commentary can be read on the OFA website at http://www.ofa.on.ca.
