Manitoba RCMP received 3,250 calls for property crime in September 2022

The number of calls for property crime Manitoba RCMP received increased between September 2021 and September 2022.
A monthly statistics report shows Manitobans made 3,250 calls for instances of property crime in September 2022. This is compared to 2,851 in September 2021.
Each of Manitoba’s three districts experienced individual increases.
The biggest jump in calls for property crime came in the west, which includes communities like Portage la Prairie, Morden and Shoal Lake.
Manitoba RCMP received 961 calls for property crime in that district in September 2022, compared to 720 in September 2021. This represents a 33 per cent increase.
Of the types of crimes reported in that area, calls for possession of stolen goods jumped by 140 per cent from 20 calls in September 2021 to 48 calls this September.
Given many properties in the district are being closed for the winter, seeing higher frequencies of property crime isn’t surprising, said Tara Seel, a media relations officer with the Manitoba RCMP.
“In West District, there is quite a bit of cabin country,” Seel told CTV News. “So you just want to keep in mind that there are seasonal dwellings that have been inhabited throughout the spring and summer that are now being closed up and vacant, and, you know, it maybe provides more of an opportunity for some criminal activity.”
In northern Manitoba, which includes The Pas, Churchill and Moose Lake, calls for property crime increased by 10 per cent from 1,232 in September 2021 to 1,360 in September 2022.
This region experienced a jump in break and enters, with people reporting 66 of them last September compared to 103 break and enters this September. This represents an increase of 56 per cent.
And in Manitoba’s east, which includes Beausejour, Selkirk and Steinbach, the number of calls for property crime increase by 3 per cent between September 2021 and 2022, from 899 to 929.
This region experienced a higher number of calls for break and enters and instances of theft under $5,000.
The east had 92 break and enters in September 2021 compared to 133 this September, an increase of 45 per cent.
And the number of calls for theft under $5,000 increase by 26 per cent from 172 last September to 216 this September.
