USDA mobilizes aid for wildfire-hit Texas and Oklahoma

By Farms.com

In the wake of destructive wildfires across Texas and Oklahoma, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has taken decisive action to support the recovery of affected farmers, ranchers, and communities. The agency, under the leadership of Secretary Tom Vilsack, has deployed resources and staff to offer immediate aid and facilitate long-term recovery efforts.

Key initiatives include providing over 200 USDA Forest Service personnel for fire suppression and informative sessions to guide producers on available assistance. USDA’s emergency loan program, alongside the Livestock Indemnity Program (LIP) and the Emergency Assistance for Livestock, Honeybees, and Farm-Raised Fish Program (ELAP), are pivotal in aiding producers to recover from their losses. Policy flexibilities have been introduced to streamline the aid process, ensuring timely support.

To further support affected livestock producers, the USDA has expanded emergency haying and grazing rights and allocated $6 million in Texas for wildfire recovery via the Environmental Quality Incentives Program (EQIP). Assistance programs are also in place for farmland rehabilitation, forestland restoration, and watershed protection, demonstrating the USDA’s comprehensive approach to disaster recovery.

In addition, USDA Rural Development offers vital services to help rebuild rural homes, businesses, and infrastructure, ensuring a robust recovery framework for all impacted by the wildfires. This robust response package from the USDA highlights its unwavering commitment to the well-being of the nation's agriculture and rural communities.
