Effort focuses on connecting habitats on working landscapes

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) is stepping up efforts to connect wildlife habitats across agricultural and forested landscapes, as announced by Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack. This initiative brings together various USDA agencies like the NRCS, FSA, FS, and APHIS to enhance ecosystem connectivity and support biodiversity.

The department's focus will be on incorporating wildlife corridor considerations into its program planning and execution, improving cross-agency coordination, and enhancing partnerships with state, tribal, and federal entities. This will enable more effective conservation practices across America's vast landscapes.

The initiative underscores the ecological and economic benefits of connected habitats for species such as the Greater sage-grouse, the Louisiana black bear, and various migratory game.

USDA’s collaborative approach with landowners offers incentives for integrating wildlife-friendly practices into farming and forestry operations, promoting a landscape that supports both agricultural productivity and wildlife sustainability.

In addition to land management efforts, the initiative includes technological advances in wildlife management and strategic conservation efforts like the Bison Conservation Transfer Program, which supports tribal wildlife efforts.

By reinforcing connections between public and private lands and integrating traditional ecological knowledge into conservation strategies, USDA aims to mitigate challenges like habitat fragmentation, climate change, and invasive species.

These coordinated efforts are part of a broader strategy to ensure the vitality of America’s wildlife and the lands they inhabit, fostering a balanced approach to land use and wildlife conservation.

This proactive move by the USDA aims to create a sustainable framework for the future of America’s wildlife and agricultural landscapes, ensuring ecological integrity and economic stability.
