Ag Producers Workshop Slated For June 29 In Mertzon

The Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service will conduct the multi-county Ag Producers Workshop on June 29 in Mertzon.

Dorper sheep, such as these ewes with their guard donkey in Irion County, will be part of the Ag Producers Workshop program in Mertzon scheduled June 29.

The Irion, Sutton and Tom Green county program will be at the Mertzon Community Center, located behind the football field at 118 W. Duncan Ave.

Registration will begin at 8 a.m. with the program to follow at 8:30 a.m.

“This program aims to help ranchers take advantage of the good rainfall and improving range conditions we’re having,” said Shane Wigington, AgriLife Extension agent in Irion County. “Livestock selection, optimizing grazing and improving habitat will be the focus of the day.”

Presentations will include: Considerations for Rambouillet and Dorper Sheep Production in West Texas, Grazing Strategies for the Long Haul, Herbicide Updates for West Texas Brush Control, Enhancing Wildlife Habitat and a Predator Association Update.

AgriLife Extension specialists from San Angelo who are scheduled to speak include: Dr. Reid Redden, state sheep and goat specialist; Dr. Morgan Russell, range specialist, and Dr. John Tomecek, wildlife specialist.

Pig weight loss hits right as market prices are typically rising in July and August, creating a double-hit financially. New nutrition studies conducted on-farm have led leading nutritionists to a solution that includes higher soybean meal inclusion rates in the summer diet.
