Agribition President Has Deep Roots In The Show

his year marks the 49th Anniversary of Canadian Western Agribition.

Chris Lees is President of the show this year and has a special tie and a long term relationship with the show.

His father was a founding member of Canadian Western Agribition.

“He and a couple of his friends dreamt it up, they wanted to display cattle in Western Canada and that’s kind of how Agribition started.”

Unfortunately, his dad passed away in 1974, when the show was only three years old.  The Lees’ family have stayed in the business and have been here at Agribition for 49 years.

He says they’ve never missed one show, noting he can still remember the first show he attended.

Chris and his wife Tina are Hereford breeders and own and operate C & T Cattle Company at Arcola.

He joined the CWA Board of Directors in 2012 and has served the board in a variety of capacities over the years.

“ I think my dad would be in “aw “  of the show today and be amazed at how it has grown, especially worldwide.   We have 1000-1200 people here from 70-80 countries.  I don’t know if he dreamt that big or not, but I‘m sure he’s looking down on us saying “man this is something unbelievable.”

Finding a Balance of Innovation and Regulation - Dr. Peter Facchini

Video: Finding a Balance of Innovation and Regulation - Dr. Peter Facchini

Regulations help markets and industry exist on level playing fields, keeping consumers safe and innovation from going too far. However, incredibly strict regulations can stunt innovation and cause entire industries to wither away. Dr. Peter James Facchini brings his perspective on how existing regulations have slowed the advancement of medical developments within Canada. Given the international concern of opium poppy’s illicit potential, Health Canada must abide by this global policy. But with modern technology pushing the development of many pharmaceuticals to being grown via fermentation, is it time to reconsider the rules?

Dr. Peter James Facchini leads research into the metabolic biochemistry in opium poppy at the University of Calgary. For more than 30 years, his work has contributed to the increased availability of benzylisoquinoline alkaloid biosynthetic genes to assist in the creation of morphine for pharmaceutical use. Dr. Facchini completed his B.Sc. and Ph.D. in Biological Sciences at the University of Toronto before completing Postdoctoral Fellowships in Biochemistry at the University of Kentucky in 1992 & Université de Montréal in 1995.
