Alberta Municipalities Declaring Agricultural Disasters Continues To Climb

Months of hot dry conditions and a severe lack of moisture is taking its toll on crops, hay and pasture conditions.

Farmers in many areas are reporting low yields with crops being short and thin, with many of the crop heads not filling out or podding as usual.

Weeks of extreme temperatures is also causing problems for water supplies, dugouts and sloughs with many already dried up.

As of last week, a total of 18 municipalities in Alberta had declared agricultural disasters, which will allow producers to qualify for any available aid.

Some municipalities are said to be experiencing one in 50 year droughts.

Alberta Environment and Parks has approved several temporary changes to grazing and water regulation to open new sources of feed for livestock.
