Annual Conference Promotes Cover Crop and No-Till Practices

Field crop growers looking to enhance their operations using cover crops and no-till practices will benefit from attending the 2025 No-Till and Cover Crop Conference on February 13.

The annual conference features a stellar lineup of speakers from several states and Canada who will present information on a range of topics to help farmers build resiliency into their cropping systems. It will be held at the DoubleTree by Hilton in South Burlington from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. with registration open at 8 am.

The conference fee is $75, $50 for students, and includes lunch with speakers Jean-François Messier and Sébastien Angers. These Canadian farmers will describe agronomic innovations, projects and trials of Quebec farmers.

Registrations will be accepted until February 7. Certified crop advisor and water quality and custom applicator credits are available.

After welcoming remarks and updates from various state agricultural agencies, Rafiq Islam, Ohio State University, will explain the impact no-till practices and cover crops have on soil health, crop productivity and food quality. Odette Ménard, a Quebec soil and water conservation expert, will discuss soil health and compaction while John Wallace, Pennsylvania State University, will cover weed control in no-till and cover crops.

Participants also will hear from several University of Vermont (UVM) Extension researchers. Juan Alvez, Joshua Faulkner and Shawn Lucas will provide updates on UVM soil and water research. Heather Darby will join Steve Dwinell, Vermont Agency of Agriculture, Food and Markets, to share current research on neonics. In addition, UVM Extension’s Jeff Sanders and Scott Magnan, Scott Magnan’s Custom Services, will talk about precision agricultural management.

The conference is hosted by UVM Extension's Northwest Crops and Soils Program and the Champlain Valley Crop, Soil and Pasture Team.
