Barlow reappointed as Conservative Shadow Minister for Agriculture, Agri-Food and Food Security

Conservative Leader Pierre Pollieve announcing his shadow cabinet this week.

Pollieve tapping Alberta MP John Barlow as the Shadow Minister for Agriculture, Agri-Food and Food Security.

Barlow saying he's pleased to be back in the role.

"I think it is an affirmation from the new leader recognizing the work that we have done in the agriculture file over the last couple of years. Certainly, my team and I, we're very passionate about the industry. Not only agriculture, but agri food, processing, the value chain and supply chain issues."

He says there's a lot of work to be done on the ag file, noting that the Liberal government doesn't seem to recognize the fire power that agriculture is for the economy, and is putting policies in place that are putting farmer's at a competitive disadvantage.

Six hundred Canadian farms grow grain for Warburton's under custom contract — and that partnership exists because of Canadian plant breeding. Now the man responsible for maintaining it is sounding the alarm.

Adam Dyck is the program manager for Warburton's Canada, a company that produces over two million loaves of bread a day for more than 20,000 retail locations across the UK. He's watched Canadian wheat deliver thirty years of yield gains and quality advancements that make it worth sourcing at scale — and shipping across the Atlantic. But he's also watching the investment conditions that produced those gains come under pressure. Dyck makes the case for a new funding mechanism that brings both public and private dollars into wheat breeding before Canada's competitive window starts to close.
