Canada, U.S. And Mexico Sign Updated New NAFTA Deal

Canada's agri-food exporters are calling for the quick ratification of the amended North American free trade deal.

On Tuesday, December 10, Canada, the United States and Mexico signed on to the updated text of the new trade deal in Mexico City.

In a statement, Canadian Agri-Food Trade Alliance President, Dan Darling, says they welcome the announcement negotiations have concluded on updating the Canada-US-Mexico Agreement, or CUSMA.

Darling says they look forward to receiving confirmation the changes don't negatively impact their members.

"We applaud the leaders of all three countries in re-negotiating a comprehensive and high-standard agreement that will ensure North America continues to create jobs and opportunities for people in all three countries, and takes our free trade platform to the next level," he said.

Darling says all three parties must complete their ratification processes without further delay.

Dr. Colin Hiebert, research scientist with Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada – Morden, is focused on developing new tools that wheat breeders can use to improve, diversify and strengthen disease resistance in new wheat varieties. This includes new genomic tools that address resistance to five diseases including: Fusarium head blight, leaf rust, stripe rust, stem rust and common bunt.

Learn more about how research conducted at AAFC-Morden will impact wheat variety development, production and profitability for the future.
