Canadian Federation of Agriculture Welcomes CPTPP Ratification

The Canadian Federation of Agriculture (CFA) was pleased to see the Trans Pacific Partnership (CPTPP) receive Royal Assent last week.

CFA President Ron Bonnett says ratification will allow Canadian farmers to have first-movers advantage.

"It's good news for those export commodities, particularly pork and beef...One of the things I think was a bit of a concern is that if we were late in ratifying it, others countries might have had a bit of a head start on it. It gets us in on an equal footing with a lot of other countries."

He notes diversifying the mix of countries that we export Canadian agricultural products to is essential to trade stability.

CFA is insisting that the federal government help mitigate potential damages to supply managed sectors from trade deals such as CETA, the USMCA and the CPTPP.
