The Alpaca’s were a big hit at Canadian Western Agribition.
Carol Poole has Tiger Lily Ranch at Edam and Chaired the Saskatchewan Premier Alpaca Halter Show this week.
She says Alpaca’s are known for their fiber, adding the fleece they shear off in the spring is three times warmer than wool and is not itchy.
“When I shear my animals I sell my bags of fleece to a company called Alpaca Naturally which is based in Saskatchewan. They turn around and they make different yarns, they make alpaca socks, so we have Canadian made alpaca socks. The other cool thing about Alpaca Naturally is that they grade and class the fleece so all the fibre’s being put into a sock is of the same quality.”
Poole says the Alpaca’s are great animals to own and fun to work with, adding there are currently about 30 Alpaca farms in the Province.
It was the first time the Alpaca’s were back at Agribition in 17 years, they had a strong interest in the show with 55 animals; she notes they are hoping to be back again.
“We’re so thrilled! The Agribition group that we’ve dealt with has been amazing. I’ve shown Alpaca’s from BC to Ontario and I’ve never been treated so well. It’s so nice, I hope we get to be here for 40 years.”
The Alpaca’s have now moved out to make room for the sheep which have their Commercial Sheep/Market Lamb show Thursday at 4 pm in the Canada Centre Show Sale Arena.
