Canary Seed Looks Promising In 2021

The Saskatchewan Crop Commissions held their Annual General Meetings this week.

The Canary Seed Development Commission held their AGM on Monday with Chuck Penner from LeftField Commodity Research giving the market outlook presentation.

He told producers that Stats Can puts canary seed production for 2020 at about 160,000 tonnes.

Penner says a drop in acreage last year has resulted in tighter supplies and a bullish market.

He notes on crop to crop comparisons in the dark brown soil zone canary seed pencils out pretty good, and thinks we could see new crop bids coming in around 25 cents.

"He says the question is what does that do for acres, because last year they stacked up fairly well too.

"Canary seed projected returns stacked up quite well, and actually acres went down. So, my question is what are we going to see in 2021 for seeded area?"

Penner is expecting to see an increase, and anticipates acreage could reach about 290,000.
