dsm-firmenich receives CFIA approval for first Mycotoxin degrading ingredient in poultry and swine

dsm-firmenich Animal Nutrition and Health — a global science-based company focused on nutrition, health and sustainable living — announced the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) approval of a novel enzyme, fumonisin esterase, to help swine and poultry producers manage mycotoxins in feed.

dsm-firmenich will offer a new product which includes the fumonisin esterase called Mycofix®FUMzyme® for use in swine and poultry diets in Canada. More information will be available in the coming weeks.

Paige Gott, Ph.D., dsm-firmenich Strategic Product Manager, said, “Fumonisin esterase is for the degradation of fumonisins present in swine and poultry feed. This approval expands dsmfirmenich’s commitment to innovation in mycotoxin risk management.”

“This will be the first product ever to be approved for degrading fumonisins in feed in the Canadian market,” said Gott. “Mycotoxins can have various negative effects on swine and poultry production. Fumonisins are the second most prevalent group of mycotoxins worldwide. Fumonisins are commonly found in livestock diets in North America and can interact with other mycotoxins and have synergistic effects that impair health and productivity of livestock and
poultry. They are of increasing importance with more frequent extreme weather events in the region.”

Customers interested in learning more about mycotoxin solutions should contact their dsmfirmenich representative or visit the Mycofix FUMzyme webpage.

Dr. Maria Mendoza, Global Consulting Expert with Evonik, recently spoke to The Pig Site’s Sarah Mikesell at the World Pork Expo in Des Moines, Iowa, USA about the use of trypsin inhibitors in soy products and how that effects the digestion of amino acids. The variability of quality of the soy products can affect the rations of the soy products in the complete diet of the pigs. Evonik has monitoring services that can assist producers with determining the variability in their suppliers’ soy products.
