Farmers Day Celebrated on June 12

It was Farmers Day on Friday,.a tradition in Alberta that dates back to the 1940's. At one time it was a provincial holiday.

A lot has changed over the past 80 years, but the special day in June has remained. Scott Bolton, the president of UFA says this year, more than ever, farmers and ranchers are being placed a pedestal, for the incredible work they've done this spring, in keeping our store shelves full, along with the bellies of Canadians.  "It's a testament to the incredible fortitude and strength and determination of our industry and the men and women who are in it.  Could you imagine the extent of this crisis if we had not been able to maintain our food supply chain the way we did.  It's a remarkable story and, frankly, it deserves more reporting than it's probably getting and I think Farmers Day is one opportunity for us to take a moment in time to stand back, remember, and reflect on what this industry has achieved in this last three months.  It has been remarkable."

Bolton thinks that many people in our province will have a greater appreciation for what the farmers do for us. "Those we associate with that aren't necessarily, day to day, involved in agriculture have come to me to reflect on the fact that we appreciate and should appreciate more on what our farmers and ranchers are doing.  There is criticism always in anything you do but the vast majority of Canadians, Albertans, support this industry 100 percent.  This has only increased with the performance of the industry through this crisis."
