FDA Issues Draft Guidance to Ensure the Safety of Animal Feed On-Farm

Today, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration issued a draft guidance* to help animal producers ensure the safety of animal feed that is used on-farm. The draft guidance outlines steps animal producers can take to identify and prevent feed contaminants that are sometimes present in the farm production environment and could jeopardize the health of farm animals and the safety of human food derived from the animals. The FDA is accepting public comments on this draft guidance beginning on March 20, 2015. To submit your comments electronically to the docket, go to http://www.regulations.gov and type FDA-2014-D-1180 in the search box. Please note that the docket will not be open to accept comments until this date. The comment period will close 75 days after it publishes in the Federal Register. While comments are welcome at any time, you should submit them by the closing date for the FDA to consider your comments in drafting the final guidance.

SUMMARY: The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is announcing the availability of a draft guidance for industry #203 entitled ``Ensuring Safety of Animal Feed Maintained and Fed On-Farm.'' This draft guidance is intended to help animal producers (persons who feed animals) develop and implement on-farm practices to ensure the safety of animal feed maintained and fed to animals on the farm.

DATES: Although you can comment on any guidance at any time (see 21 CFR 10.115(g)(5)), to ensure that the Agency considers your comment on this draft guidance before it begins work on the final version of the guidance, submit either electronic or written comments on the draft guidance by June 3, 2015.
