Federal Ag Minister Waiting For Provincial Ag Ministers To Fix Agri-Stability

The federal ag minister made it clear this week, the prairie provinces have until the end of next month to respond to her proposal to fix Agri-stability.

The offer was made late last year and Marie Claude Bibeau says her prairie counterparts have had long enough to make a decision. She says if there is no consensus among Canada's ag ministers by the end of next month, the program will stay the same, something she said would be unfortunate.

The 3 prairie ministers have held back their support for the cost-shared program, over concerns about the added expense, should they be called upon to pay out, if something triggers a payment under the program. Since the proposal was made, many farm groups have given it a thumbs up, saying that while it's not perfect it is a good start.

On Thursday, the issue came up during question period. ND leader Rachel Notley went after the Premier Jason Kenney for not signing onto the temporary fix.

Bibeau indicated she would be willing to meet, virtually, with her provincial counterparts to discuss the matter, but only if they come prepared with an answer, as to whether they will support the measure or not. It sounds like such a meeting is being planned for early next week.
