Feeder steer prices showing some improvements

Checking out the Prairie Cattle Marketing Report for the week ending March 29th.

Manitoba feeder steer prices ranged from an average of $457.30 per cwt for the 401 to 500-pound weights to an average of $288.25 per cwt for the 901+ weights.

Feeder heifer prices ranged from an average of $400.40 per cwt for the 401 to 500 pounds, to $264.25 per cwt for the 901+ heifers.

Saskatchewan steer prices established new all-time highs last week in the 400 to 500 weight category with an average of $497.83 per cwt, down to $293 per cwt for the 800-900 pound steers.

Feeder heifer prices ranged from an average of  $411.78 per cwt for the 400-500 weights down to $301.50 per cwt for the 800 plus category.

The Canfax price for Alberta fed steers for the week ending March 29th was $238.55 per cwt - the highest so far in 2024.

Slaughter cow prices were mixed, in Manitoba D1-D2 cows averaged $155.20 per cwt with D3's averaging 131.75 per cwt.

In Alberta, D2 cows averaged $165.37 per cwt and $147.67 per cwt for D3 cows.

What fell from Hurricane Helene was historic in the state of North Carolina. The amount of rain was put into perspective of enough to fill Lake Mead. Dr. Kathie Dello doesn’t usually do comparisons like that, but does plenty of figuring on what happened in the weather and climate each day in her job as the state climatologist of North Carolina. Some of the biggest rainfall amounts were in the 20 to 30 inch range over a three day period that will likely change the state for the next three decades or more. We get into 100, 500 and 1,000 floods, the closing of I-40 for a year and how -- if at all – certain things should be rebuilt.
