Hay Market Demand And Price Report For The Upper Midwest As Of November 14 , 2016

Demand and Sales Activity

Prices were lower this week with some demand for quality hay . Small lots of small square bales continue to find strength at markets. Lower quality hay price ha d some strength , but overall prices continue to reflect a large supply of hay and a low current demand .

For Nebraska , alfalfa and grass hay sold steady . Demand was light to moderate this week . Some feedlots are inquiring about hay prices for fal l and winter delivery.

For Iowa , limited hay supply and sales this week as farmers are wrapping up fall field work .

In South Dakota , alfalfa hay was mostly steady with light demand and light to moderate interest . Mild weather allowed cattle to be pastured on corn stalks.

Straw sold at lower prices. In I llinois , the demand for hay was m oderate, with activity slow to moderate, for moderate to heavy offerings.

For Missouri, few local sales this week overall very limited activity. Hay demand is light, with moderate supply and steady prices . Cooler temperature s could spur more interest for hay.

In Southwest Minnesota, total loads available for sale increased at market this week. The first time in months that some prime hay was available at the market .

Overall prices were steady . In Wisconsin , l ower quality round bale hay is readily available . P rice s are steady, with little hay movement this week as good weather has farmers working on fall harvest and field work.

Overall straw price decrease d this week. Small square bale straw decreased slightly averaging $ 3 . 30 a bale this week (range of $ 1 . 0 0 to $6.00) . Large square bales slid back $ 3 .00/bale and averag ed $ 27 . 0 0 per bale (range of $ 1 5 . 00 to $ 4 5 .00) . L arge round bale s in creased $ 4 .00/b ale and a verage d $ 3 2 .00 per bale (range of $ 22 .00 to $ 3 8 .00) .
