Health Canada is banning the use of strychnine to kill gophers.
 
The agency's website says an evaluation of data confirms there are risks to other animals.
 
Some provinces and agriculture groups opposed the ban, noting strychnine is the only effective means for controlling gophers.
 
Health Canada says it reviewed comments from agriculture groups, governments, environmental groups and the general public.
