Confirmed Avian Influenza Cases Prompt Swift Action
The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) in collaboration with the New Jersey Department of Agriculture (NJDA) has reported the confirmation of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) in several live bird markets across Hudson and Mercer Counties.
These recent confirmations mark a significant increase in the incidences of HPAI within the state, with proactive measures now being enforced to curb further spread.
According to authorities, the affected markets were identified through routine testing of domestic poultry. The samples, collected on March 4 and 5, were analyzed at the New Jersey Animal Health Diagnostic Laboratory, with confirmatory tests underway at the National Veterinary Services Laboratory.
In response to the outbreak, the impacted live bird markets have been quarantined. They will remain closed until thorough cleaning and disinfection measures are completed. Additionally, they will not receive new poultry until officials confirm the virus has been eliminated.
“The live bird market operators have been fully compliant with our requests and have taken the necessary steps in efforts to prevent avian influenza in their businesses,” said NJDA Secretary Ed Wengryn.
While the risk to the general public remains low, health officials are monitoring individuals exposed to infected poultry. They urge poultry farmers and industry workers to follow strict biosecurity measures to prevent further spread. Symptoms of HPAI in birds include respiratory distress, swelling around the eyes, and reduced egg production.
The USDA and NJDA continue to monitor wild bird populations, as they serve as natural reservoirs for avian influenza. Farmers and bird owners are encouraged to report suspected cases and follow recommended safety guidelines.
