A deal to provide hydrogen fuel engines to a Canadian builder of ag machines has been signed.

Cummins Inc.—headquartered in Columbus, Indiana—a multinational corporation that designs, manufactures, and distributes engines, filtration, and power generation products will provide a hydrogen version of its 15-litre engine to power the high-end Versatile brand of tractors built by the Winnipeg, Manitoba-based Buhler Industries Inc., an ag equipment manufacturer that was first established in 1932.

With a letter of agreement signed, Buhler and Cummins are continuing their investment in ag tech, combating the GHG emission challenges.

The Cummins hydrogen combustion engine will provide a cost-effective zero-carbon fueled solution for high load factor and high utilization applications.

“While diesel engines continue to be the flexible power of choice for the foreseeable future in agriculture, such a collaboration enables both companies to develop low and zero carbon solutions that are ideally suited to farming,” said Adam Reid, Versatile’s Vice-President of Sales and Marketing.

He continued, “Cummins has recently announced its plan to leverage existing platforms and expertise in spark ignited technology to build hydrogen engines. The high commonality among engine components between diesel and hydrogen leverages scale advantages for OEMs while delivering the reliability that farmers need.”

So… a hydrogen fueled Versatile brand tractor—coming soon to a dealer near you.
