Local abattoir capacity a challenge to local food

In the November-December 2022 issue of Small Farm Canada Dan Needles gave a shout out for small scale harvesters.

His foreword to this call described two big issues that need tackling to ensure the sustainability of livestock production in the local food movement. One was small grain harvesting solutions, and the other local abattoirs. This has been a concern for some time and is largely driven by government regulations and industry consolidation.

In our early summer issue Small Farm Canada speaks with Catherine Michaud, General Manager of the Canadian Meat Goat Association about challenges related to the loss of local abattoirs.
