Loose pig found in Winnipeg last Friday

Last Friday, representatives from Manitoba Pork were notified that a pig was found near Portage Avenue and the Perimeter Highway. Staff worked with provincial veterinarians and the Winnipeg Police Service to safely load the pig onto a livestock trailer. The pig was taken to its intended caretaker, as instructed by the pig’s original caretaker.

Manitoba Pork is aware of efforts from local animal rights activists to move the pig to an animal sanctuary. Manitoba Pork does not own, manage or control the sale of any of the pigs that are raised in the province.

This video is an essential watch for pork producers who are looking to safeguard their operations against the threats of diseases like foot and mouth disease, classical swine fever, and African swine fever. Why Should Pork Producers Care? An outbreak of foreign animal diseases in the U.S. could lead to severe restrictions and potentially result in industry-wide financial losses estimated between $15 to $100 billion. The SPS Plan is a collective effort to prevent such catastrophic outcomes by enhancing biosecurity, ensuring animal traceability, and promoting effective disease monitoring.
