Minister of Agriculture and Irrigation RJ Sigurdson issued the following statement on Food Day Canada:

“Aug. 5 is Food Day Canada, an opportunity to celebrate and thank Alberta farmers, ranchers and food processors who feed us every day.

“There are many ways to support our hard-working producers and processors. You can buy from local growers, producers, distillers and brewers, shop the local section at the grocery store, eat at restaurants that serve local food or head to your community farmers’ market.

“It’s now easier than ever for shoppers to quickly identify food and beverage products from our province with the new Made in Alberta voluntary labelling program. The program allows Alberta producers and processors to label their locally made goods. Made in Alberta was launched in March and there are already about 225 labelled products in production, with more on the way.

“Food Day Canada also leads right into some of Alberta’s own food celebrations. Alberta Local Food Week is the third week of August and includes Open Farm Days on Aug. 19 and 20. Albertans will be able to meet the farmers and entrepreneurs who work hard to put food on our tables and see first-hand how food is produced.

“I invite all Albertans to participate in Food Day Canada to learn more about how our food is produced and sample some of the delicious food products made right here in Alberta every day.”
