MPSG On-Farm Network Releases Trial Results

The 2020 results of the 56 on-farm research trials that were conducted in partnership between Manitoba Pulse & Soybean Growers’ On-Farm Network (OFN) and its participating farmers have been released.

The information has been released in a variety of formats, including as short, easy-to-consume videos. In addition, and for the first time since the program’s inception, this year’s On-Farm Network results package contains a brief economic analysis for each trial.

“From investigating a novel curiosity to testing product efficacy and validating agronomic management practices, the OFN supports farmer decision making,” says Megan Bourns, On-Farm Network agronomist. “Creating the opportunity for meaningful, unbiased, home-grown science to take place in your fields on your farm, the OFN answers the questions that are important for your operation. We are passionate about bringing participatory, precise and proactive research to the farm. We hope you enjoy the 2020 Results Series, and look forward to what 2021 has in store!”

OFN investigates a variety of agronomic questions and it is always open to new ideas, new questions and new participants.

“This program is for farmers, by farmers and we need farmer-input to make sure it stays relevant and applicable to decisions faced on the farm today,” added Bourns.

David Rosero, PhD, assistant professor of animal science at Iowa State University, and R. Dean Boyd, PhD, consultant with Animal Nutrition Research, recently spoke at the Iowa Swine Day Pre-Conference Symposium, titled Soybean 360º: Expanding our horizons through discoveries and field-proven feeding strategies for improving pork production. The event was sponsored by Iowa State University and U.S. Soy.

Every pig producer, nutritionist and veterinarian is familiar with the summer dip. Pig weight loss hits right as market prices are typically rising in July and August, creating a double-hit financially. New nutrition studies conducted on-farm have led leading nutritionists to a solution that includes higher soybean meal inclusion rates in the summer diet.
