NDSU Schedules Calf Backgounding Program

The program will cover topics including feeding calves in a declining market and feeding calves for weaning. Cattle producers will be able to learn about backgrounding calves during a video program the North Dakota State University Extension Service is offering in October.
 
The program consists of prerecorded presentations, which will be available beginning at 7 p.m. Oct. 22.
 
“Backgrounding is an alternative to selling calves at weaning,” says Karl Hoppe, area Extension livestock specialist at the NDSU Carrington Research Extension Center. “This program will help producers learn more about the cattle-feeding issues with volatile market prices, managing calves preweaning for a successful weaning, veterinary issues, feed availability, alternative feeds and feed price, and alternative grazing programs for weaning.”
 
The topics and presenters for this event are:
  • Feeding calves in a declining market - Tim Petry, Extension livestock economist, NDSU Agribusiness and Applied Economics Department
  • Setting calves up for weaning - Carl Dahlen, Extension beef cattle specialist, NDSU Animal Sciences Department
  • Stocking the medicine room - Gerald Stokka, Extension veterinarian and livestock stewardship specialist, NDSU Animal Sciences Department
  • This year’s feed situation: availability and prices - Hoppe
  • Delaying weaning or weaning onto late-season grazing alternatives - Fara Brummer, area Extension livestock systems specialist, NDSU Central Grasslands Research Extension Center, and John Dhuyvetter, area Extension livestock systems specialist, NDSU North Central Research Extension Center.
