NOVA SCOTIA FRUIT GROWERS ELECT NEW PRESIDENT

Apple grower Peter Eisses is now helming the Nova Scotia Fruit Growers’ Association, stepping into the shoes of past-president Larry Lutz.  At the annual general meeting held on January 28-29, growers returned the board with one new director.  Vice-president is Janet Chappel; treasurer is Robert Peill.

The board of directors includes: Dwayne Barteaux, Starr Best, David Eisses, Craig Nichols, Doug Nichols, Travis Pearson, Rene Penner, Michael Van Meekeren and Jeffrey Walsh.

The director-at large will be voted in at the next board meeting.

The Golden Apple Award was presented to Michael Walsh, Rockland for the best management of an on-farm apple tree nursery.

Dr. John DeLong, storage physiologist at Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada’s Kentville research station was also honoured for many years of dedicated work.

The association has between 50 and 60 growers who are managing about 4,200 acres in the province. They are still recovering after two years of weather-related damages that included spring frost, hail and Hurricane Dorian.
