Oat Acres Expected To Increase In 2020

The Prairie Oat Growers Association (POGA) held its AGM last week in Winnipeg.

Brennan Turner with FarmLead gave a talk on the oats market heading into 2020.

"The elephant in the room is always the Chinese and can we get there," he said. "Right now, it's probably one of the faster growing markets in terms of oats demand. That being said, the majority of oats that China purchases comes actually from Australia. There not purchased from Canada because of some phytosanitary situation."

Turner noted we're seeing more headlines around alternative demand with products such as oat milk.

He's expecting to see an increase in oat acres in 2020.

"Right now, we're seeing some really good prices compared to year's past. But the challenge is, this is actively buying acres for the 2020 crop. We're probably not going to see the prices that we do today, tomorrow (this time a year from now) and that's because you're just going to see a little bit more acres get planted next year. Not just here in Canada, but also there's talk of more acres in the U.S., Australia...and even the EU."
