Oklahoma Dairy-Hay Market May Heat Up As Cold Sets In

Prices of dairy-quality hay may increase with the onset of cold winter weather, says Jack Carson, USDA market reporter.

The going price for dairy-quality hay in Oklahoma, similar to last year’s, averages $200-220/ton, reports Jack Carson, USDA-Oklahoma Department of Agriculture Market News reporter. But that could rise as winter approaches.

Recent cold weather that moved into the state has increased the need to feed supplemental hay, he says.

Right now, little if any good- to fair-quality hay is being sold, Carson adds. “The feedlots and the grinders are pretty full – they’ve got what they need. We made a ton of grinding hay this year, but we did not make that much of the premium- and supreme-quality dairy hay.”
