Pulse Specialist Happy With Field Pea Harvest

Manitoba farmers have been making good progress on the field pea harvest.

Provincial Pulse Specialist Dennis Lange was asked about the quality of the crop.

"For the most part really good," he said. "There were some challenges in certain areas where they got too much rainfall too fast, so there's going to be some quality issues. They matured too quickly, they're going to be small. Overall though peas are looking really good, no real issues at this point."

Lange says pea yields are also looking good for the most part. He notes with the positive yields this year and early harvest, the number of acres could rise next year.

Last week's crop report pegged field pea harvest at 70 per cent complete.

White rot, also known as sclerotinia, is a common agricultural fungal disease caused by various virulent species of Sclerotinia. It initially affects the root system (mycelium) before spreading to the aerial parts through the dissemination of spores.

Sclerotinia is undoubtedly a disease of major economic importance, and very damaging in the event of a heavy attack.

All these attacks come from the primary inoculum stored in the soil: sclerotia. These forms of resistance can survive in the soil for over 10 years, maintaining constant contamination of susceptible host crops, causing symptoms on the crop and replenishing the soil inoculum with new sclerotia.
