The Saskatchewan harvest has wrapped up for the year, with the final crop report of the season on Thursday showing yields mixed compared to the 10-year provincial average.
Crop yields varied throughout the province, the report said, depending heavily on the amount of moisture received throughout the season. Yields in the drier southwest and west-central regions were once again below average, with some producers reporting slightly improved yields compared to last year’s severely drought-reduced harvest.
In contrast, crops in the eastern and northern regions were much improved compared to 2021, with many producers reporting yields higher than average. The largest impacts on yields this year were drought, gophers, grasshoppers, wind and drowned out crops in the spring, the report added.
This year’s spring wheat and canola yields are estimated by the province at 44 and 36 bu/acre, both 3 bu above the 10-year average. The oat and barley yields are pegged at 93 and 64 bu/acre, compared to the averages of 81 and 59 bu, while flax was 1 bu above the average at 24 bu/acre. At 1,195 lbs/acre, the provincial canary yield also topped the 10-year average of 1,125 lbs.
