Seedling Disease Reported In Soybeans

Manitoba Agriculture is reporting some signs of seedling disease in early seeded soybeans.

Plant Pathologist Holly Derksen notes some of the seed treatments could be wearing off.

"Anything that was treated going into the ground, take into consideration how long it took to get out. Usually we say with seed treatments, you have about 2-3 weeks of protection. If they're not out of the seedling stage within 2-3 weeks of planting, you might want to be looking out for some seedling disease issues."

Seedling disease in soybeans can be caused by a number of different organisms including Fusarium spp., Pythium spp., Rhizoctonia solani, and others.

Derksen notes there is the potential that seedling disease could be occurring in other crops, in addition to soybeans, depending on how long the seeds sat in the ground.
