Spring planting prep - 5 Must-do checks for your seed tender

As the planting season approaches, it's crucial to get your seed tender in peak condition. To avoid costly delays and repairs, follow these essential checks:

1. Prioritize Safety:

Begin with safety checks. Ensure that all safety signs and reflectors on your seed tender are intact, readable, and correctly positioned. When replacing parts, ensure the new components include safety information. Test the brakes on both the seed cart and towing vehicle and confirm that all lights are in working order.

2. Wireless Remote:

Many seed tenders come equipped with handheld wireless remotes, which can be prone to loss or damage. If you replace your remote, remember to pair it with your tender's receiver. Additionally, inspect the coin batteries in the remote; if they've drained, replace them with batteries of the same type and size.

3. Engine Battery and Maintenance:

For seed tenders featuring electric start engines, pay attention to the engine battery. After months of inactivity, the battery may require recharging. Before charging, disconnect the battery from the system. Clean and assess the battery posts and terminals. If necessary, charge the battery at the lowest setting in a well-ventilated area. Reinstall the battery, apply light grease or petroleum jelly to the posts, and securely tighten the terminals. Don't forget to check for oil leaks in the engine and perform an oil change.

4. Keep Things Greased:

Proper lubrication is essential for maintaining the moving parts of your seed tender. Utilize high-quality lithium-based grease to lubricate components, especially if your seed cart includes an auger. Remember to grease the wheels to ensure smooth functionality.

5. Visual Inspection:

Before heading to the fields, conduct a thorough visual inspection of your seed tender. Look for any cracks or damage to the frame. Examine the auger or conveyor for signs of wear or damage. Inspect hydraulic hoses and connections and confirm that the jack stands and tires are in proper working condition.

By performing these checks now, you can significantly reduce the risk of costly delays during the upcoming planting season. Always refer to your seed tender's documentation for specific pre-season maintenance guidelines tailored to your equipment.
