Thistle Caterpillar Present In Manitoba

Insects was one of the topics covered last week at the annual crop school held in Carman at the Ian N. Morrison Research Farm.

Jordan Bannerman, an instructor with the University of Manitoba, talked about thistle caterpillars.

"Thistle caterpillar is something that we've been observing at noticeable levels throughout most of the province this year," he said. "It is a very apparent insect when it's present in soybean crops. It's something that's causing a bit of concern."

Bannerman adds some farmers have been spraying for thistle caterpillar, although he says those spraying were mainly concerned about the potential for future damage rather than basing their decision on current economic levels.
