Trade Dispute Could Impact Hog Markets

The trade dispute between the United States, Canada and Mexico could start to have an impact on the hog markets.

That from Tyler Fulton, director of risk management with Hams Marketing Services.

He says Mexico has targeted U.S. pork hams and bellies as two items that they intend to place a tariff on.

"In the event that we do actually see those tariffs being applied to those U.S. products, with Mexico being the largest destination for U.S. pork, it would have a very significant impact on the market and we would start to see a significant reduction in the volume of those products going into Mexico and consequently inventory that's simply backing up in the U.S. and prices dropping as a result of that large inventory," commented Fulton.
