U.S. hay prices tracked lower in September than in the previous month, according to the USDA’s Agricultural Prices report released Sept. 29.
Overall, U.S. alfalfa prices declined from an average of $209/ton in August to $197/ton in September.
From August to September, Arizona saw a $45/ton reduction in alfalfa prices to $195/ton; Oklahoma, a $27/ton decline to $190/ton; Nevada, a drop by $20/ton to $240 and New Mexico, a $15/ton reduction to $255/ton. Kansas growers experienced an $18/ton price drop to $173/ton, USDA reports.
Wisconsin alfalfa hay prices increased an average $20/ton to $150/ton from August to September. Pennsylvania growers saw a $17/ton hike in alfalfa prices to $204/ton, while New York alfalfa prices jumped $16/ton to $221/ton.
The average U.S. all-hay price was $176/ton in September, down from $185/ton in August for an $11/ton drop.
Of the 27 states reporting all-hay prices, 18 showed price declines since August.
After experiencing unexpected rains that caused flash floods in September, Arizona saw the biggest drop in average prices – by $45/ton to $195.
