Weekend Rains Stall Harvest Activity In the Red River Valley

It wasn't as much rain as producers were hoping for. Only about 4/10ths fell in the Emerson area Sunday into Monday, according to local farmer Larry Neumann.

"We missed the big stuff again," said Neumann. He expects any extra moisture Tuesday will benefit the corn and later soybeans, adding its likely too late for most other crops.

Meantime, the harvest is progressing in the region and Neumann says a majority of his wheat and oats are off, noting peas were finished up Saturday night. He reports wheat yields are into the high 70s/low 80s, with peas coming in around 56 bushels an acre.

"Considering, I'm surprised we're getting the kind of crop we are with so little moisture," said Neumann, adding quality has been very good so far in the peas, oats and wheat, and he hopes that carries on for the rest of the crops this season.

As for soybeans, Neumann says they're starting to dry up on the bottom leaves and could've used some rain about a month ago.
