Western Canadian Cattle Market Weakening

The cattle market in western Canada has been weakening over the past few months.

Brian Perillat is Manager/Senior Analyst at Canfax.

"It's been quite disappointing...Through 2018, western Canada pretty much enjoyed the strongest markets in North America, especially on the fed cattle side and we've seen our basis weaken significantly. U.S market has been steady to strong, whereas the Canadian market here has been weakening. Feedlots, they're seeing some pretty big losses if they're selling cattle on the cash market right now. Could be looking over $200 head losses."

Perillat notes a steady Canadian dollar is also not providing any relief.
