Wheat Growers Make Grain Act Review Submission

The Western Canadian Wheat Growers have made their submission to the Government of Canada regarding the recommended changes to the Canada Grain Act.

The Canada Grain Act was last updated in 1985.

“The Wheat Growers have long seen the need to update the Grain Act. There are men and women farming today, that were not born when the Act was last upgraded. Agriculture and technology have changed substantially in the last 36 years,” said Jim Wickett, Secretary-Treasurer and SK Director.

The key recommendations in the Wheat Growers submission are:

Outward Weighing and Inspection should be performed by 3rd parties;
Governance model should better represent jurisdictions with CEO and board of director structure;
Funding should involve a combination of public and private funds;
Surplus should be returned to the farmers who funded it;
Grading should allow flexibility to better reflect the buyer's needs;

“The Wheat Growers have listened to our members and grain farmers from across the prairies to arrive at these recommendations. These changes will bring great improvement to the Grain Act and better support grain farmers into the future,” added Wickett.

Video: A chain harrow is a game changer

Utilizing a rotational grazing method on our farmstead with our sheep helps to let the pasture/paddocks rest. We also just invested in a chain harrow to allow us to drag the paddocks our sheep just left to break up and spread their manure around, dethatch thicker grass areas, and to rough up bare dirt areas to all for a better seed to soil contact if we overseed that paddock. This was our first time really using the chain harrow besides initially testing it out. We are very impressed with the work it did and how and area that was majority dirt, could be roughed up before reseeding.
