Chisel plows are used for agricultural operations that require soil tilling - either deep or shallow. They are often used on undisturbed land for the first pass of tilling, effectively breaking-up the soil and bringing undesired debris to the surface, including roots and rocks. The maximum depth a typical chisel plow is 18", but usually set around 8" to 12" deep. The primary functional parts of the equipment are called shanks, and chisel plows can be purchased with between 3 and 7 shanks, depending on your operation needs.
